Last month Peckham saw the launch of three new distinctive arts spaces – all a short walk from each other and providing a compact tour of part of the growing art scene in south London. South London Gallery‘s new extension, Peckham Space and Hannah Barry Gallery’s Bold Tendencies IV all offer innovative programmes which reflect a thriving art community in the area.
Bold Tendencies IV is situated on levels 7-10 of the Peckham Rye multi-storey car park, just a short walk from Peckham Rye station. Transforming the top floors of the disused space, this open-air exhibition showcases sculptural works by artists including Anthea Hamilton, Sam Kennedy and Rachel Adams. An added bonus is the spectacular view of London’s skyline, which can be enjoyed with a cocktail from Frank’s pop-up café.
A few steps up to Peckham High Street brings you to Peckham Space, an innovative organisation on the square that produces new artwork in response to life in Peckham, often alongside local residents. Here you can investigate Ana Laura López de la Torre’s commission, produced with members of Peckham’s Harris Academy, which explores the theme of neighbours.
At the end of this Peckham art tour we come to the South London Gallery. The gallery’s new extension has transformed the space and includes an artist residence, new exhibition and education spaces and a café. The current exhibition, Nothing is Forever, celebrates the opening of the new space by showing wall paintings, drawings and text pieces by 20 British and international artists, and offering an opportunity to tour the artist residence. After exploring the exhibitions, visitors can relax with a coffee in the charming new café or the serene Fox Garden.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there – if you’d like to sample some more of the south London art scene, beyond Tate Modern, why not try visiting a few of the following interesting spaces: Gasworks, Beaconsfield, Café Gallery, Dilston Grove, Autoitalia, APT, the Woodmill, Bearspace and SE8.
